DIY Website vs. Hiring a Pro: What’s Right for your Business?

If you’re running a local business, chances are you’ve asked yourself this question at least once: Should I build my own website or hire someone to do it for me?

It’s a valid question—and the answer depends on more than just your budget. Your website is often the first impression someone gets of your business. It’s your digital storefront, your 24/7 salesperson and sometimes, the deciding factor between someone calling you or your competitor.

So, let’s break it down: When does it make sense to DIY, and when is it smarter to call in a pro?

Option 1: DIY Website Builders (Wix, Squarespace, WordPress, etc.)

Website builders have come a long way. With drag-and-drop tools, pre-made templates and low monthly fees, they’ve made it easier than ever for non-techy folks to get something online fast.

When DIY Makes Sense:

  • You’re just starting out and need something simple to get online quickly.
  • You enjoy learning tech and design tools.
  • You have time to dedicate to building and maintaining it.
  • Your site doesn’t need complex features like online booking, e-commerce or integrations.

When DIY Can Backfire:

  • You don’t have a clear brand or content strategy.
  • You’re not sure how to write SEO-friendly content or create a smooth user experience.
  • You’ve started it, gotten frustrated and it’s been “under construction” for months.
  • You’re not seeing results, and you’re not sure why.

Reality check: Just because it looks “done” doesn’t mean it’s working. A website that doesn’t convert visitors into customers isn’t really helping your business.

Option 2: Hiring a Pro

A professional website designer (especially one who understands marketing and small businesses) can help you not only make your site look good—but actually work for you.

When Hiring a Pro Is Worth It:

  • You’re serious about growing your business and want a site that reflects your brand.
  • You don’t have the time (or desire) to build and manage a site yourself.
  • You want strategic guidance—like what pages to include, what to say and how to get found on Google.
  • You’ve outgrown your DIY site and are ready for the next level.

When It Might Not Be the Right Fit (Yet):

  • You’re in the earliest stages and don’t have clarity around your services or target audience.
  • Your budget is extremely limited, and a $50/month DIY site is all you can swing for now. (And that’s OK—just treat it as a temporary solution.)

Questions?
There’s no shame in starting with a DIY site. In fact, many successful business owners do. But as your business grows, your website needs to grow with it.

If your website isn’t pulling its weight, or you’re tired of cobbling something together that never quite feels “right,” it may be time to bring in someone who knows how to turn clicks into customers.
