Florida Beach Trip
It was seven degrees in Minnesota when we left for a sunny Florida beach trip. (wuff) When I think of the sunshine state – Florida Man, oranges, Disney, cruises and tourists. I was apprehensive to plan this trip, but I wanted cheap + low key + a warm escape from Minnesota’s winter. Florida was exactly that + so much more!
I put together our (me + my sister + our bestie) itinerary along with a few stories + tips from our beach trip.
Treasure Island, FL
January 15 – 18, 2020
Starting Point – Tampa, FL
The first day we flew to Tampa + hit the ground running. We took a car service about an 30 minutes west to Treasure Island + started exploring.
We rented an AirBnB, perfectly located with one side being a bay + the other the gulf and walking distance to so much!
We walked to Sea Dogs Brewery, sat on the open-air patio + ordered drinks + chowed down. Highly recommend – shrimp + grits!
Keeping the buzz going + made a to-go cocktail (had no idea about open container laws in FL – two thumbs up) + made our way to our AirBnB rooftop patio.
Check out our view above! That’s my sister, Cayla + me + BFF Kiki. We danced + sang Backstreet Boys + watched the sunset from the roof top.
We wrapped up our first day with grocery shopping ($$$ saving tip) + making dinner together + drinking red wine + catching up.
Day 2: Beach it Up
We enjoyed a slow morning with mimosas + avocado toast + fruit + eggs. We all sat on our patio, overlooking the bay. (drool emoji) We got ourselves together + grabbed beach gear (provided by the AirBnB – chairs + soccer ball + boogie board) + headed to the beach.
We grabbed a foam cooler of Blue Moon + frisbee from the grocery store down the block + proceeded with a beach day. The sand was soft + water was clear…so perfect. I swam the majority of the time + with a beer in my hand.
My happy place.
We concluded Day 2 with take out Mexican food + more wine + hot tub + early bed time.
Lesson Learned: I thought I would be bored with a beach day because generally I am a fast-paced + driving + hiking + exploring traveler. I surprised myself with how much I loved not having a plan + floating in the salt water.
Day 3: More Beach Bummin’
We had another slow morning with more mimosas + avocado toast + gossiping about The Bachelor on our balcony. We discussed our options for the day…John’s Pass Boardwalk + St. Pete + orrrrrr the beach again. We chose the beach – I was craving the water.
Spent another day swimming + playing frisbee + soaking in the vitamin D. Since it was our last night, we NEEDED to venture out at least once, so we hopped in a cab + the driver recommended Saltwater Hippie. Sold! We listened to live music + danced + more red wine…girls trip!
Day 4: Homeward Bound
We took another 30-minute cab ride back to Tampa + caught our flight home to a blizzard in Minnesota.
- I misjudged Florida – I’d officially recommend adding this place to your bucket list.
- It’s nice to get some good rest on a trip.
- Not everywhere in Florida is touristy in the winter. We barely saw any.
- I love the gulf.
- I need to slow down a bit more while traveling.
